Regret
by Benji

She entered the room
and a feast of light
encircled her smile.

Her beauty was remarkable
and I watched and waited,
trying to speak-
wanting to say something,
but how can my words ever express
what only the heart can understand

Words danced in my mind
but shyly stopped when
they reached my lips.

She left the room
and the morning light escaped with her.
All that remained with me
was an ocean of evening shadows.

Regret: A man sits in a cafĂ© and wonders about his seemingly endless list of concerns. Just when he appears to be lost in thought, a remarkably attractive female enters the room. An unfamiliar sense of light surrounds her contagious smile and he too finds himself half-smiling. He feels a strange sense of attraction to her and his stomach does somersaults as she momentarily passes his way. He tries to say something, but his tongue does not move. In what appears to be a moment of time, she leaves the room and metaphorically takes the light (‘hope’) with her.
Ever find yourself thinking about what could have been if you had said something? The poem, ‘Regret’, embraces that feeling and illustrates how quickly you can lose an opportunity that can almost grab you by the arm.
